10 Sep Macular Degeneration Affects Both, Young and Old, Are You at Risk?
What are MD, AMD, and JMD, and What Are the Symptoms?
Macular degeneration is a condition in which the macula, the central area of the retina in the back of your eye, gradually deteriorates. This can cause you to gradually lose your sharp central vision. The leading cause of vision loss is Macular Degeneration (MD), Affecting more than 10 million Americans. More than cataracts and glaucoma, combined. It can affect both, the young and the elderly.
AMD is Age-Related Macular Degeneration and if the disease is found in the young, it is referred to as JMD, Juvenile Macular Degeneration. AMD is the number one cause of vision loss in the US.
Macular Degeneration is caused by cell deterioration of the central and most sensitive portion of the retina, which is the inside, back layer of the eye known, as the macula. It collects highly detailed images and sends them to the optic nerve which in turn, sends them onto the brain and the brain interprets them as sight. The macula focuses on central vision in the eye and controls our ability to read, drive, recognize colors, faces and see fine detail.
Macular Degeneration Symptoms
Some people may not experience symptoms in the early stages of MD and as it advances, they may experience symptoms of “fuzzy” vision, straight lines on a page appearing distorted, difficulty reading, seeing details in low light settings, gray areas in the eye or a blind spot in the center of vision. Later, if the disease progresses, people experience wavy or blurred vision and if the condition continues to worsen, central vision may be completely lost.
Slow Down the Progression Naturally
There is currently no known cure for Macular Degeneration, but there are things you can do to reduce your risk, and possibly slow the progression once you’ve been diagnosed. For example, you can pursue lifestyle changes in your diet and exercise plan, avoid smoking, and protect your eyes from ultraviolet light. Natural supplements offer promise when specific combinations of antioxidants and zinc are used. Studies have shown these supplements may reduce the risk of advanced AMD and its associated vision loss.
The National Eye Institute Recommends an Antioxidant and Zinc!
The National Eye Institute (NEI) recommends people with moderate to advanced age-related macular degeneration (AMD) take a supplement with a specific combination of antioxidants, and zinc-based on the Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS2). Results from the AREDS showed that high levels of antioxidants and zinc significantly reduce the risk of advanced AMD. These same nutrients had no significant effect on the development or progression of cataracts.
